ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the religions and philosophies of India (including
Hinduism and Buddhism), and to look at their significance for young European people today.

The training activities will focus on three main areas:
- An introduction to the origins, philosophy and practices of Indian Religions;
- Approaches to key issues from Indian and South Asian culture particularly relevant to European Youth
Work (e.g. leadership, political engagement and environmental sustainability, as well as self
development, well-being and purposeful living);
- Interfaith Dialogue in general, its aims, techniques, tools and how to do it in one’s own context.

Europe today is a melting pot of cultures, faiths, languages and peoples. A culture’s religion and philosophical
thought encapsulates its people’s values and ideas, sets forward their role models and is integrally related to
a sense of identity for many. If we want to understand our fellow Europeans and neighbouring cultures, we
must understand each other’s religions. In this way this course seeks to address the growing nationalism,
racism and sense of disaffection across Europe, through the corrective viewpoint of multi faith understanding.
It is the first of three courses that will also look at Chinese religions and Islam.
This course will use non-formal educational methods, including theatre, presentations, group work, sharing
and games. Specific sessions will look at practices like yoga and meditation, include a visit to a beautiful
Hindu Temple, and other places of worship, and an exploration of the epic Mahabharata story.
