ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ

"Love will find its way through all languages on its own" - Rumi
The aim of this week-long course is to provide an introduction to Sufism, the most artistic and mystical side
of Islam. It is the second of three courses that are also looking at Indian and Chinese religions.
The course will focus on two main areas:
- An introduction to the origins, philosophy and practices of Sufism, including Sufi poetry, music and
dance;
- Approaches to key issues in Sufi culture particularly relevant to young European adults and Youth
Work, such as self-development, well-being and purposeful living as well as leadership, political
engagement and environmental sustainability.
Europe today is a melting pot of cultures, faiths, languages and people. Islam in particular is at the front of
many key issues in Europe today (the Refugee ‘Crisis,’ globalization, cultural diversity and identity, security
and foreign policy). Sufism will be explored as a corrective to ‘monolithic’ views of Islam (i.e. as being only
one thing), for its cultural and philosophical richness, as well as its potential for positively contributing to a
harmonious, just and sustainable Europe.
This course will use non-formal educational methods, including theatre, presentations, group work, sharing
and games. Specific sessions will look at practices like Sufi dance and meditation, an exploration of Persian
poetry and the relationship between Sufism and other forms of Islam.
