ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ
Conflict is repetition. Violence and hostility are unconscious re-enactments of previous, violent experiences,
trapped in the individual or collective psyche.
The purpose of this course is to explore these negative cycles, both through Shakespeare and in our personal
biographies. We will look at how violence repeats and, more importantly, how it can be prevented from doing
so. Alongside this explorative work, we will share tools and techniques of theatre, which can be used to
illuminate and address conflict-situations (eg. Augustus Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed) as well as actor’s
exercises for freeing the voice and developing increased personal presence. We will take ‘The Merchant of
Venice’ as our study text, creatively researching its themes of revenge and mercy, oppression and
forgiveness.
The course will culminate in a live, public performance of scenes from the play, designed to distil and
demonstrate our exploration of cycles of violence and how they can be broken by an act of mercy.
